Layman's Terms
Medical massage is performed for the purpose of improving conditions that have been diagnosed by a physician. A wide variety of techniques are utilized to focus the treatment based on the diagnosed condition. Techniques are performed by a nationally certified, medically trained massage therapist working within the guidelines prescribed by a physician to assist with the curative outcomes.
Who Can Perform Medical Massage Therapy?
A Nationally Certified Medical Massage Therapist (NCMMT) performs the prescribed procedure. To become NCMMT, one must complete a minimum of 600 hours of traditional massage curriculum at a state licensed training facility. The intensive training to become a NCMMT includes supervision and training in the areas of orthopedic evaluation, curative physical medicine, and proper documentation procedures. Upon completion of the aforementioned, the qualified, licensed massage therapist must apply to the American Medical Massage Association to take the examination. If accepted, the massage therapist must complete a 150 question exam and a board review of their credentials. David A. Clinger, owner and senior Licensed Massage Therapist of the Wellness Center for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork is the first Nationally Certified Medical Massage Therapist in the State of Ohio and the only one in northwest Ohio. In the industry, he is also know as a Master Medical Massage Therapist since he has completed all of the required course work and passed the required examinations.
Just What the Doctor Ordered
To request a "Medical Massage" a patient/client must obtain a prescription from their family physician or specialist. To legally treat a patient/client, a massage therapist must know what they are treating. After all, it is beyond the scope of practice for a massage therapist to diagnose, therefore, they must work from a physicians order. If your physician has a question about our intake process, please have them contact the Wellness Center.
Common Medical Conditions Treated by Medical Massage Therapy
Medical Massage Therapists help relieve the underlying pain and suffering those medical patients are faced with as they battle any number of conditions and ailments. NCMMT's treat patient's pre and post operative for:
- Work related injuries (Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, Sciatic Nerve Dysfunction, lower back pain)
- Personal Injuries - (Auto Accidents and Physical Trauma)
- Cancer - (Incomplete Lymph Systems and Lymphedema)
- Joint Replacement
- Frozen Shoulders
